A bookshelf for a private house.
Here I worked with a structural engineer and we focused on one idea: “Thinking furniture as a small architecture”.
This bookshelf consists of “Paper”, “Wood” and “Iron” and we discussed the balance of those three materials. “Paper” is books, “Wood” is the floor where the books are arranged and “Iron” is the pillars that support them all.
We made a self-supporting leg system, using three 9mmφ steel pieces. Three legs are installed for 2400mm width and a 12mm thick layer of plywood is placed on top of it. Finally, the weight of the book is added to it, making the bookshelf structurally available for the first time.

個人住宅のための本棚。
構造家と共に、家具を小さな建築として考えることを主題とした。
本を、この本棚を構成する「紙」というひとつの素材として捉え、それを並べる「木」の床、それを支える「鉄」の柱という、3つの素材のバランスを検討した。
9mmφのスチール3本で自立する脚を制作、幅2400mmに対し、3つ設置。そこに、12mm厚の積層合板を乗せ、さらに本の重量がかかることで、初めて構造的に成立する。
